The border fence along the Notwane River is worn out and it needs replacement in some places as it has been vandalised.

Answering a question in Parliament on behalf of the Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, Mr Shaw Kgathi, the Minister for Presidential Affairs and Public Administration, Mr Eric Molale said the construction and rehabilitation of border fences between South Africa and Botswana is governed by the 1973 Boundary Treaty.

“The treaty places the responsibility for the construction and replacement of boundary fences on South Africa, who after the repair and/or construction would bill Botswana for the 50 per cent of the agreed cost,” he said.

Minister Molale further said the Ministry of Defence, Justice and Security was engaged with South Africa on issues affecting the countries’ common border in respect of the rehabilitation of the fence, including possibilities for the review of the 1973 Treaty.

He said bush clearing along the boundary fence for purposes of security patrols would commence in the 2016/2017 financial year, after the necessary consultations with the relevant South African counterparts as it was required by the operational protocols relating to boundaries.

The MP for Ramotswa, Mr Samuel Rantuana had asked the minister if he was aware that the border fence along Notwane River was worn out.
He also wanted the minister to state when he intends repairing the fence, and whether the ministry would consider clearing the bush along the buffer zone to improve patrol along the border. Ends
