Ministry aware of lack of transport

04 Feb 2016

The lack of public transport between Ghanzi township and Grootelaagte as well as between the township and Qabo cannot be attributed to bad roads because operators are free to apply for public transport permits in any route.

The Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr Tshenolo Mabeo said if the road was found to be bad, the ministry subsidies the operator.

Mr Mabeo said the referred roads were not included in the National Development Plan 10 hence they have not been tarred, and said they would be considered along other priority roads during NDP 11.

He said routine maintenance would continue to be done on the two roads by grading them twice every month in order to ensure that they were in good condition, and said the last grading was done end of January this year.

Ghanzi South MP, Mr Noah Salakae had asked the minister if he was aware that there was no public transport operating between Ghanzi township and Grootelaagte as well as the township and Qabo due to bad roads.

He also asked the minister if he was aware that the untarred roads to the two villages discouraged investments into the two villages and to state when the roads would be tarred. ENDS
