A3 road reaches design life

03 Feb 2016

The A3 road which runs from Francistown to Mamuno junction, from Francistown to Maun and Maun to Sehitwa has reached its design life. The Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr Tshenolo Mabeo, said this when responding to a question in Parliament on Tuesday. These road sections, Mr Mabeo said, were planned for NDP 10.

However, due to economic meltdown, he said they were shelved, adding that the road would be considered together with other roads for inclusion in NDP 11. “My ministry is well aware that the section of A3 road between Nata to Gweta, Gweta to Maun and Maun to Kuke is not fenced.

There is no consideration to fence the sections of the road as they are migratory routes for wild animals,” he said. However, the minister said the Francistown to Nata section was fenced even though the fence had dilapidated.  “My Ministry has budgeted for repairs of this 190 kilometre fence this coming financial year,” he added.

The Member of Parliament for Nata/Gweta, Mr Polson Majaga had wanted to know if the minister was aware that the A3 road had reached its lifespan and was long overdue for maintenance and that the major road was not fenced and thus roaming livestock caused a considerable number of road accidents.
