Teachers parents urged to join hands

27 Jan 2016

The Member of Parliament for Selebi Phikwe West, Mr Dithapelo Keorapetse has urged teachers and parents to join hands in ensuring that children receive good quality education.

He said he was proud that schools in Selebi Phikwe, especially at primary school level, produced good results and said all this happened place because teachers, parents and ward development committee members worked together in putting more effort towards providing quality education.

Mr Keorapetse said this when addressing a meeting at Kagiso kgotla recently.

He said poor results in secondary schools were due to high juvenile delinquency.

He said some delinquent students have become rebellious towards teachers thereby also neglecting their school work.

He, however, noted that his parliamentary office was committed to supporting all students in the constituency in any way they could.

He said their motive was to encourage students to take education seriously and work hard as they were the future of the country.

He urged parents to be involved in their children’s education and to help teachers achieve their goal of producing quality results which would put Botswana on the world map.

He also called on parents to instil a sense of responsibility among their children.

On other issues, the MP urged the youth to utilise grants availed by the Youth Development Fund and engage in projects that could sustain their lives to avoid depending on the Ipelegeng programme to make ends meet.

The chairperson of ward development committee, Ms Ruth Makoba requested that a mobile post office be set up in the area so that senior citizens would not have to travel long distance to the Central Business District where the current post office was located to collect their monthly pension payment.

She also said the government should set up a post office in the area since the population has increased.

Ms Makoba further said the Selebi Phikwe hospital structure was old and needs urgent attention.

She also noted that the hospital was experiencing shortage of staff, adding that the number of nurses should be increased to improve service delivery. ENDS
