University demystifies science

27 Jan 2016

Botswana University of Science and Technology (BIUST) continues to stimulate interest in mathematics and science across the pre-tertiary sector.

Recently they were in Tsabong and Middlepits to train science teachers and learners. They also staged science shows as a way of demystifying science and motivating prospective leaners to be interested in science and mathematics.

In an interview during the training of teachers, the chief coordinator of the science outreach programmes at BIUST, Ms Leapotswe Bantsi said the workshop was meant to popularise science because most people think it is a difficult subject.

“All that we are doing is to make them realise that it is everywhere,” pointing out that some teachers often complain that there was lack of resources while in fact they could use just about anything to conduct practicals,” she said.

Ms Bantsi said it was important that teachers and parents should facilitate and let children explore because that way they learn easily and could be innovators in the future.

She pointed out that if the right mode of teaching was implored, everything would be possible.

Going forward, she said they were optimistic that Batswana woud appreciate science and do it with passion because they have shown excitement and have what it takes.

One of the teachers at the workshop, Mr Lenyeletse Mokgethe of Kgolagano Junior Secondary School learnt that we could use available resources to teach where we feel that there were no resources.

“You can make students interested by letting them being hands on during lessons,” he said.

He further said the workshop was good for all teachers including those at primary because they could catch them young. The workshop attracted around 140 teachers. ENDS
