Mandunyane residents need help

26 Jan 2016

Some residents of Mandunyane were on Sunday evening left with no shelter after a thunder storm blew their roof-tops away.

Consequently, Tonota MP, Mr Thapelo Olopeng, has appealed for help to assist the affected residents.

Addressing Mandunyane residents , Mr Olopeng urged the private sector, parastatals and individuals to assist the victims.

He said an assessment would determine how the affected people could be assisted as some of them had lost property while others had no shelter.

Mr Olopeng, who is also the Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture, said parents had to ensure children’s safety during the rainy season.

He said 17 victims were assessed including one pre-school and one primary school and only one injury was registered of a young school going child, who was hit by a brick on the head but luckily no deaths were recorded.

The social worker, Ms Dimpho Mohiha, said they had already identified three victims who needed tents for accommodation.

For his part, Mandunyane councillor, Mr Morgan Madumela urged builders to recommend building materials for people to buy to ensure houses were in a good condition for people to stay and urged people to do house inspections for security assurance.

One of the victims, Mr Kelapile Tekee said furniture and food had been damaged and the roof was all gone.

He said one of his children was hit by a brick on the head, but luckily she suffered minor injuries.

Mr Tekee said he was not employed but applauded the social worker and councillor who came to visit them and provide emotional support, which showed them the government does care about the welfare of citizens. Ends
