Roaming livestock in Kanye worrisome

24 Jan 2016

The roaming of livestock in Kanye is a cause for concern among residents because they cause accidents and destroy property in yards.

Residents of Mongala ward raised the concern at a kgotla meeting addressed by area Councillor, Mr Kabelo Lemme, council environmental officer, Mr Oduetse Gaosejwe and Kanye Station Commander, Supt Mmoloki Mogale recently.

Residents said small scale farmers herd their animals into the village for water and pasture.

They said livestock predominantly cattle and donkeys disrupt motorists, consume rotten garbage and drink dirty water from drains which may cause diseases.

They said bye-law officers must take action against herd boys who drive their livestock into the village, adding that even though the country was hard hit by drought it does not mean that farmers should be allowed to commit such offences.

Kanye Station Commander Supt Mmoloki Mogale decried the illegal immigrants who are harboured by residents. He said farm owners visit cattle posts and lands to check on their  herd boys after a long time, and that some dont even pay them while others do not buy them food.

The station commander also said he was worried about house breakings and rape cases in the village.

Councillor Lemme briefed residents about what has been discussed in last year’s council meetings and motions debated. Bokhutlo
