21 Jan 2016

Botswana Football Association (BFA) president, Tebogo Sebego has advised Sankoyo Bush Bucks Club to put its house in order to attract the interest of the business community.

He said for the business community to come on board and support the club, the team should have a positive outlook

Sebego said this when addressing the Maun business community to sensitize them about the importance of sponsoring a local team. The meeting was organised by Sankoyo Bush Bucks management who invited the president to come and engage the business community and other stakeholders.

The BFA president described Ngurungu as a big brand which brings tourism to the Ngamiland region since its promotion to the premier league and emphasised the need for the business community to appreciate that the team also brings business.

“Many people plan their holidays here as the team continue to bring tourism the whole year as it has attracted a lot of attention from the nation, including the political leadership,” he added.

Sebego explained that in football sponsorship was not necessarily about popping out huge amounts of money, but that a small contribution like accommodating a team, providing food, water or donating some balls was welcome.

He urged the business community to contribute in kind towards the sustenance of the team.

He said money was good but urged stakeholders to look for other options of supporting the team which has put their region on the map and brought diversity and football closer to the people.

Sebego said failure to support the team would deny the growth and development of football in the country. He called on local authorities, club management and the business community to work as a team as all benefit from the continuous tourism, noting that football in general brings a lot of excitement because the team brings more visitors.

He cited an example about the newly promoted team, Orapa United which he said was enjoying support from all stakeholders because it had some strategies in place which were working wonders for the survival of the team.Sebego said other teams could learn a lesson from Orapa United. He revealed that it was his wish to see Ngurungu surviving relegation and staying long in the premier league.

He said the team enjoys a massive support base and that the players have unique physical attributes that make them more attractive. He said even the national team coach managed to recruit some players from Sankoyo.

Sebego emphasised the need to change the players mindset so that they see football as a major industry which could change their lives for the better.
The president was accompanied by national team coach, Peter Butler who also shared the same sentiments that Ngamiland has a wealth of talent in sports which needs to be developed.
