Youth decry lack of facilities
14 Jan 2016
Youth in Gumare have requested government to build recreational facilities in their village.
Speaking on behalf of his peers at a cultural night, which was part of the roving torch activities, Mr Jonah Molapisi, said youngsters in Gumare needed to have such facilities to distract them from engaging in unpleasant activities.
Mr Molapisi said most artists were roaming the streets while others indulged in alcohol due to lack of such facilities.
Recreational facilities, he said, could motivate artists in the Okavango Sub-district to take their talent seriously by staging shows.
Artists also requested their Member of Parliament, Mr Thato Kwerepe, to ask Botswana Television’s Mokaragana crew to visit their village to record their songs.
The crew’s visit to the village would cut travelling expenses to Gaborone, they added.
In response, MP Kwerepe promised to take their requests to the relevant authorities.
Ms Tshephang Mojuta of Gumare Advisory Association outlined objectives of the association and its progress since formation in 2012.
She said the association promoted and upgraded personal and social integrity by promoting self-reliance as well as social responsibility.
It also maintained collaboration with stakeholders to help youth with their business, give artists opportunities to market themselves, career guidance, life skills and behavioural change for youth to better their lives.
Ms Mojuta complained that the notion of one man one plot could limit youth who had business aspirations.
She requested government to put in place a tertiary institution in Ngamiland to improve youth access to higher education.
Ms Mojuta also urged parents to advise their children to be committed to education.
A standard seven pupil at Tubu primary school, Laone Basha encouraged other students in the country to take their studies seriously and eventually attain better results.
‘’It is important for the students to pass with excelling marks on their studies for the realisation of the pillar of an educated and informed nation towards our 50 years of independence celebrations,’’ he stressed. Ends
