Fashionist reaps from festive mood
29 Dec 2015
Fashion design businesses in the Moshupa Sub-district have experienced a boom in the festive season.
Speaking in an interview, Latch Investments managing director Betty Kophuting said they were overwhelmed by customers during the festive season.
She therefore wished clients could spread their orders over a 12 month period rather than placing them at the eleventh hour.
Kophuting who was funded through Youth Development Fund to the tune of P93 000 said her fashion design business has seen tremendous growth since its inception in 2012.
She said sometimes she liaises with other fashion designers to help cater for her clientele, but however noted that there are customers who are particular about her art work.
She said the boom during the festive season was triggered by choir competitions, weddings and other festivities in which the German Print popularly known as leteisi is the in thing.
She said the African Print also sells well during the period because people want to look smart and love to be smart, therefore the garment or rather pattern increases their gorgeousness.
Ms Kophuting is of the view that Moshupa population may be too many for fashion designers to handle during peak operational periods.
Order placements for school uniforms are soaring, she said, adding that she is forced to work extended hours to beat January 05, 2016 which is the opening day for schools.
She said fashion design is influenced by cultural and social attitudes, and varies from time to time and place; therefore it needs a creative and experienced fashion designer with the right skills to cater for what the clientele desires.
She said fashion design is excellent as it gives the client the best cut or pattern of his or her choice as compared to buying in retail shops, citing that if one buys in a retail shop they would need to fix or tailor the purchased item at a fashion designer which increases the price of the commodity .
