Botswana Games hosts, Francistown,  have been crowned champions.

Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) chairperson, Solly Reikeletseng, announced the results at the closing ceremony of the games on Saturday (December 12).

Reikeletseng said Francistown won a total of 106 medals that included 42 gold, 30 silver and 34 bronze medals.

In the second position was Southern District with a total of 36 medals followed by Gaborone with 45 medals and North West in the fourth position with 55 medals.

The fifth position went to Kweneng with 39 medals. Central, South East, North East, Selibe Phikwe, Kgatleng and Lobatse districts got positions six, seven, eight, nine, 10 and 11 respectively.

Trailing behind in positions 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 was Jwaneng, Sowa, Chobe, Ghanzi and Kgalagadi respectively.

In his closing remarks, the Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Moiseraela Goya, said excursions such as the Botswana Games added value to the lives of the children. 

 Goya said games were a deterrent to wayward behaviour that could emanate from idleness.

He applauded BNSC for taking the games outside Gaborone.

 He also commended Francistown for successfully hosting crowd-puller activities such as the Zebras games, the Be Mobile Athletics Marathon, premier league matches and the Botswana Games.

Francistown district commissioner, Cordelia Mpape noted that the games did not only bring medals to the athletes and districts but also played a positive aspect into social and economic activities of Francistown.

Mpape said the games unveiled the hidden talents among the youth. She noted that sports development did not only unearth talent but also created employment and improves standard of living.

She explained that the journey to Francistown hosting the games started in 2012 when BNSC indicated their intention to bring the games to Francistown in 2013 but due to delay in the completion of the stadium the games were postponed.

The patron of the games, Abel Khupe thanked all sponsors and everybody who contributed to the success of the games.
