Gunners clinch unity cup

10 Dec 2015

Extension Gunners are Men and Boys for Gender Equality (MBGE) Unity Cup champions.

They beat Township Rollers 1-0 at the National Stadium on Wednesday (December 9) evening.

Mapantsula showed their intention of winning the cup as early as the second minute by winning a free kick on the dangerous spot but failed to convert. Although the game started with low tempo, Gunners made numerous attacks, making it difficult for Rollers players to handle them.

In the 28th minute, Gunners’ Boitshoko Zikhale scored a scorcher outside the eighteenth area to give Mapantsula the lead.

Immediately after the goal, Rollers rouse from their slumber as they enjoyed ball possession although they failed to crack Gunners solid defence.

On the 40th minute, Rollers were awarded a free kick that was well taken by Kobamelo Kebaikanye but Jerome Louis header was saved by Gunners keeper.

The game went into the half time break with Gunners leading with a goal, but after halftime, Rollers coach Mark Harrison introduced Sekhana Koko, Bogosi Kaekwe and Vincent Lekorwe and pulled out Oscar Ncenga, Motsholetsi Sikele and Jerome Louis.

Koko increased the pace of the game making good crosses which were put to waste by Gofaone Tiro.

The Unity Cup was organised by MBGE to raise awareness on gender equality and issues related to gender based violence (GBV) and motivate men to take action in ending GBV, creating safe spaces for women and children at home, communities, schools and public spaces. Ends
