Mine employees show compassion
10 Dec 2015
In 2013, 99 employees of Jwaneng Mine formed a community development committee with the aim of helping unprivileged people in the country.
Mr Modimooteng Mogotsi said before they started their projects in Kokong, they met with social workers who aided them in locating those who needed assistance. As their first project in 2013, they built a one-roomed house for Mr Gofentsemang Moshupe and donated clothes and food items to five children in the village.
During a kgotla meeting recently, the committee donated two desktop computers to the tribal office and to Kokong Primary School. Speaking at the kgotla meeting, Mr Mogotsi said they decided to donate the computers after they met with the village chief, Kgosi Kemolatoletswe Moalafe.
“We decided to donate to the tribal office after Kgosi Moalefe told us that his office had no computers which made it difficult for them to perform various duties,” said Mr Mogotsi.
Receiving the computers, Kgosi Moalafe said his office has been struggling with writing and receiving letters, adding that his officers had to travel to Mabutsane to use computers. He added that his office was under performing because all the work was never done on time which became a problem for him and the villagers.
“These computers will help us to improve our services as we will be able to do our job effectively and efficiently. We live in the era of technology and it is important for us as a village to be technologically connected,” he said.
He said he was grateful to Jwaneng mine for always showing compassion to Batswana and helping villages which were out of their reach.
Furthermore, Kgosi Moalefe said he was concerned by the rate of poverty in his village. He said a lot of the villages do not have accommodation.
Ms Susan Mogage, the chairperson of the Parents teachers Association (PTA) at Kokong Primary School, said the gesture by the Jwaneng mine employees would go a long way in helping learners to be computer literate. She thanked the mine employees for the formation of such a committee and encouraged them to continue helping those who were less fortunate.
Kgosi Kgakgamatso Moletsane of Mabutsane encouraged the public to take care of the computers, adding that they were one of the fortunate villages to be assisted by the employees. He thanked the mine employees for the gifts and encouraged them to continue with the good work. Ends
