Residents name new junior school Maitlamo
09 Dec 2015
Residents of Disaneng and other stakeholders have endorsed Maitlamo as a new name for the junior secondary school which is still under construction at Disaneng ward in Maun.
The name was agreed upon and endorsed at a kgotla meeting held. Construction of the P127 million projects started last year in October and is expected to be completed before the end of next year.
The council chairperson Mr Reaboka Mbulawa informed the on-going council meeting that the new catchment areas have been established to rationalise the number of students to relief congestion in existing junior secondary schools in Maun.
He said the school would enroll 340 students from Disaneng, Andrew Wellio, Matlapana, Letsholathebe II Memorial and Bonatla Primary Schools.
Mr Mbulawa also noted that following the signed agreement between Botswana and United States governments for the Peace Corps programme, about four primary schools in the district would benefit.
The four schools include Tsau, Sehithwa, Sepopa and Shakawe Primary Schools. Mr Mbulawa said of the four Peace Corps volunteers, three are specialists in Psychology and one in English Language.
The Peace Corps volunteers work with schools for guidance and life skills decision-making curriculum. Mr Mbulawa noted that the development empowers children for improvement of results especially vulnerable children who lack parental support.
Mr Mbulawa also updated councilors on the Standard One Orientation for 2016 intake. He said a total of 2699 have been registered noting that some schools have reached their full capacity but parents still insist the school should admit more students. He advised parents to register their children where there are vacancies.
Councilors also learnt that the Tirelo Sechaba Programme was progressing well as the district had exceeded its target of 1052. It was reported that a total of 1153 participants have been enrolled under the programme of which the target had been surpassed by 101, which translates to 9.6 per cent.
As for the National Internship Programme, only 137 participants have so far enrolled and only 29 under the Graduate Volunteer Scheme. Ends
