Authority addresses anti- competitiveness
07 Dec 2015
The Competition Authority is responsible for the prevention of and redress for anti-competitiveness practices in the economy and removal of constraints on free play of competition in the market, the chief executive officer of the Competition Authority has said.
Speaking at the start of the organisation’s open day, Mr Thula Kaira said an open day was for various departments within the authority and the Competition Commission to explain their operations and activities to members of the public.
“Open day is part of the wider international festivities to observe the World Competition Day which is observed by consumer agencies, civil society and competition agencies on December 5,” he said.
He said the day would also be used to register anti-competitive complaints. “Apart from its own investigations and market inquiries, the Competition Authority requires the assistance of business and members of the public to alert it of suspected or actual cases of anti-competitive conduct,” he said.
The authority comprises of five departments, namely communications and advocacy, corporate services, competition and research analysis, legal and enforcement and mergers and monopolies.
He said the mandate of his organisation was to regulate mergers, make rules for and publicise decisions that increase fair and transparent practices, advise the government on the actual or likely anti-competitive effects of current or proposed polices, laws and directives. ENDS
