07 Dec 2015

The Ministry of Education and Skills Development does not offer in-service training for any specific school or institution.

Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Mr Moiseraele Goya said the ministry prepares annual in-service training plans for teachers and non-teaching staff which cater for short-term and long-term training based on the national priorities as informed by the individual departments in the ministry.

Mr Goya said individual departments, schools and regions also plan and implement local in-house workshops as part of staff development initiatives.

He said Naledi Secondary School has 132 teachers with a minimum qualification of bachelor’ degree plus teaching qualification or bachelor of education degree and in-service training thus becomes additional as staff development programme.

Mr Goya said due to budgetary constraints, there had not been any in-service training for teachers at Naledi in the past three years.

He said his ministry continues to request for funding for in-service training and that should it be provided, such opportunity would be provided including to teachers at the aforementioned school.

Mr Goya further said the programme was based on the needs of the target beneficiaries and would therefore vary according to the needs of the schools, regions and departments.

He said at national level, the focus was on teacher competencies to facilitate effective learning, assessment, remediation, emotional intelligence, leadership skills and strategies.
Gaborone South MP, Kagiso Molatlhegi had asked the minister to state whether there was in-service training for teachers at Naledi Secondary School.

He also wanted to know the number of teachers who have been trained to date, and the timeline for training the remaining teachers.

Mr Molatlhegi also wanted to know if the minister could provide a training programme for the teachers at the school. ENDS
