Programme to benefit 100 000 youth

The Target 20 000 initiative is expected to upskill and upscale 20 000 unemployed youth every financial year, acting director for the Department of Tertiary Education Funding, Mr Eugen Moyo told the Central District Council (CDC) seating on Monday.
Mr Moyo said his ministry came up with the five-year strategy in order to absorb unemployed youth into long and short-term programmes and to prepare youth for employment and entrepreneurships.
He said the five-year strategy was expected to benefit 100 000 unemployed youth.
The acting director explained that for the 2015/2016 financial year, the first 5 000 intake was on November and that 15 000 will start in January 2016.
Mr Moyo said the Human Resource Development Council committee has identified the categories in which the youth were to enrol in such as agriculture, transport and logistics, tourism, entrepreneurship, mining, mineral energy and water resources.
He also said they could enrol in manufacturing, ICT, creative industries, education and training, research innovation and technology. Mr Moyo told the council that unemployed youth without any training would be allowed to enrol for long-term courses while degree and diploma holders were only allowed to enrol in short-term programmes.
