Out of school programmes helpful

The Bobirwa Sub District principal adult education officer has advised residents of Selebi Phikwe and Bobirwa to take advantage of the improved out of school education and training programmes to improve their lives.
Mr Makgapeetse Seshika made the call during an interview recently that that adult basic education programme is now equivalent to Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE) and lessons are now held in classrooms in schools after government advised departments to share the use of its resources.
He said out of school education and training is now covering skills development such as basketry, food processing, bee keeping and pottery.
Mr Seshika said they are working with other government departments such as Social &Community Development (S&CD) to help those who specialises on basketry, food processing and bee keeping to be absorbed through poverty eradication programmes so that they could start their own small scale businesses.
“Those who do well in academics are sent to BOCODOL to further their studies,” said Mr Seshika.
Mr Seshika said individuals who want to be computer literate are sent to study introduction to computers at the village library under the Sesigo programme.
The officer said organisations such as Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA), Human Resource Development Council (HRDC) and Register of Companies are working hand in hand with them to help their students to register small scale businesses and accredit their skills through skills development programs like basketry and pottery.
Mr Seshika said the programme has attracted more companies and they have indicated that their employees have improved their work rate after learning how to read and right.
He said employees of BCL, Botswana Power Corporation (BPC), Bokomo and Richmark have mostly benefited from out of school basic education.
Mr Seshika advised individuals who are still illiterate to register with their office to benefit from government poverty eradication programmes.
One of the beneficiaries, Ms Odumetse Motsewabeng praised the S&CD office as it helped her took her basketry work to different shows in the country, where some of her works won prizes. ENDS
