Increase of cheating churches worrisome
02 Dec 2015
Permanent Secretary to the President, Mr Carter Morupisi said government is concerned about increasing number of churches whose activities border on cheating members of the public.
Mr Morupisi said some churches are set up as “business scams to rob people of their hard earned cash.” He said this during the UCCSA church harvest day celebrations held in Sefhophe over the weekend.
He said such churches have swindled many people of their monies under the pretext that if they give cash to the church, they are bound to reap great benefits.
Mr Morupisis noted that government has put in place mechanisms to regulate registration of churches to address the situation.
He said it was important to note that the church plays an important role in nation building, adding that they play a pivotal role in shaping and uniting the society, keeping peace and helping democracy to thrive.
In this regard, he said it was the responsibility of churches to be truthful to the word of God and understand the role they play in society.
He encouraged parents to raise their children in a godly way by teaching them trust, taking care of one another and being cheerful givers and prayerful people.
Reverend Kgoberego Gwanga also shared the views about churches that are set up as business scams to swindle people of their monies.
He raised concern of the alarming rate at which churches were springing up around the country and appreciated that government was taking a bold step in mitigating the problem.
He appreciated the fact that the Permanent Secretary to the President visited the UCCSA church, saying it showed that public servants were also involved in church activities which help in building and bringing more people closer to God. Ends
