Ministry attends to roads situation

30 Nov 2015

Assistant  Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ms Botlogile Tshireletso, says she is aware of the poor state of roads and storm water drains at White City, Bontleng, New Stands, Extension 14 and New Naledi.

She said this was because most of them had long exceeded their design life span. However, due to budgetary constraints faced by Gaborone City Council, only spot improvements of selected roads were undertaken through re-current budget.

The Assistant Minister said paving of Tholo in Bontleng was on-going and expected to finish by end of November 2015. “Storm water drain construction along Malope way (Bontleng) and at Extension 14 are planned for the next financial year 2016/17,” said Ms Tshireletso.

She said the council electrical in-house crews were busy attending to street lighting faults while the main drawback was electrical cable theft and damage by utility providers.

MP for Gaborone South Mr Kagiso Molatlhegi had asked the minister when the ministry intended to upgrade internal roads, storm water drainage and street lighting in White City, Bontleng, New Stands, Extension 14 and New Naledi.

He also wanted to know whether the minister did not deem it appropriate to include the upgrading of these locations in the Economic Stimulus Programme. Ends
