Stepping Stone International spreads to Tutume

26 Nov 2015

Stepping Stone International, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that deals with orphans and vulnerable children has stretched to Tutume Sub-district to help such children in the region.

Briefing the ongoing sub council meeting, an official from the organisation, Ms Mmaabo Setshwaelo explained that through the weaving web programme, they were aiming at working together with schools through the guidance and counselling teachers as well as Parents and Teachers Associations (PTAs) in junior and senior secondary schools to give psycho- socio support and life skills to students.

This, she said, came about as a result of recommendations from the Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MoESD) and child protection committee after the realisation that students needed guidance on some social issues which end up affecting their studies.

She noted that through the programme, they were going to work with students through their teachers’ in order to give them life skills which they would  use even beyond their schooling years.

Ms Setshwaelo highlighted that they have since realised that there were some students who have difficulty in reading English, and that they were going to have reading clinics with the aim of elevating literacy levels for such students.

This, she said, would help students because not being able to read was a huge disadvantage to pass examinations. She added that they should be able to read and understand questions.

In addition, Ms Setshwaelo said they were also going to form income generation teams, noting there were some children who have skills which could be utilised in raising funds even for the school.

She said some students at one of the schools they were working with in Mochudi have raised P18 000 through their income generating team.Ends
