23 Nov 2015

Barclays Bank Maun in conjunction with Madi Majwana Theatre Group recently hosted a financial talk at Maun Senior Secondary School.

The deputy school head, Ms Boago Senosi said the move came at the right time when students needed to be informed about their future plans. She advised them to take into consideration the skills they were taught during the drama presentation.

The production manager for Madi Majwana Group, Mr Kabelo Rapinyana said the main aim of their educational visits around the country was to advise students as well as people on the usefulness of money. Mr Rapinyana also advised the students to seek relevant advice on how to use money from their teachers.

He also advised parents to discuss money matters with their children, noting that they visited several places such as Gaborone and Palapye, preaching different life skills and also advising people to continue listening and taking into consideration money related issues.  Ms Elizabeth Wale of Barclays Bank, in her financial literacy skills presentation, said they found it useful to share money issues with others.

She said young people still had time to prepare themselves for a better future, noting that budgeting was the foremost thing to be considered before using money. She also advised participants against spending their income on unnecessary things lamenting that occasional spending was budgeted over a long period of time to avoid unnecessary costs.

Councillor for Gxhabara ward, Mr Vepaune Moreti also thanked the team for their useful teachings saying in most cases, people did not know how to spend their money with some ending up in debts.
As such he advised everyone to save the little amount they have and also to invest in some wherever possible.

Cllr Moreti advised the Madi Majwana group to start their tutoring at primary level for the young ones to know the skills of using money from a young age.
He also advised the group to meet and assist councillors with money handling skills, noting that in some cases, they did not use their money wisely.

Ms Sandra John, a Form Four student who was among the audience, thanked Barclays Bank and the Madi Majwana group for informing them about basic money skills.
She explained that the drama play taught them a lot, adding that she would start to save any little money she will ever come across.

The student also explained that she had learnt to be responsible in every action she under took and not to rely on inheritance, noting that she would like to be a pilot one day. Barclays Bank hosts the event of this nature countrywide annually to help people with better knowledge of using money.
