The Botswana Fibre Network (BOFINet) Softball League was officially launched on Saturday alongside the unveiling of the flood lights at the National Diamond in Gaborone. 

The Botswana Softball Association (BSA) and BOFINet partnership began in 2014 when the latter sponsored the league to the tune of P1 million for a year. The deal was was renewed in September this year with a P4.5 million sponsorship agreement over three years. 

The funds would be channelled to the running of the league, development programmes and upgrading of grounds, which included instalment of lights at the National Diamond.

BOFINet board chairman, Ratsela Mooketsi, stated that their company saw potential and quality in softball hence continued support. 

He said great companies had an eye for talent and opportunities. He said that they saw it fit to partner with BSA for mutual benefits. 

Mooketsi said the half a million Pula sponsorship top-up for this season showed their commitment to the sport.

“We have improved infrastructure. We installed floodlights and we believe this would also bring enthusiasm among fans as we continue to build stars,” he said. BSA president, Tirelo Mukokomani, expressed gratitude to BOFINet for its continued sponsorship.

He said the gesture would go a long way in ensuring that sport reached greater heights and help athletes realise their dreams. 

He stated that BSA’s responsibility was to ensure sustainability of their partnership with BOFINet so that its investment did not go to waste. 

Botswana Sport Commission representative, Steady Basupang, said their transformation from a council to a commission spoke to their commitment to ensuring that sport became professional.

 “BSA has done much to elevate sport and we commend them as the mother body for heeding our call of professionalism,” he said. 

Meanwhile, in softball games played over the weekend, Panthers women humbled BMC 13-4 while BMC men beat Gideon Warriors 15-3. Ends
