Primary teachers not specialists
23 Apr 2013
Parliament has been informed that primary school teachers are not subject specialists.
The Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Mr Patrick Masimolole said they were therefore enrolled at University of Botswana to study for Bachelors of Education (Primary) degree specialising in Art Education.
Answering a question, Mr Masimolole said for the purpose of promoting practical skills in Art as required by the primary school curriculum, the course followed by these teachers was relevant.
He said it was erroneous for the ministry to issue nomination letters to some teachers indicating Bachelor of Education (Art) instead of Bachelor of Education (primary)-Art Education.
He however said the affected teachers were duly informed and the matter was discussed with the University.
Gaborone Central MP, Mr Dumelang Saleshando had asked the Minister of Education and Skills Development why some teachers who were offered to study for the Bachelor of Education (Art) degree programme during the 2012/2013 Financial Year were enrolled at UB when it does not offer such a course. ENDS
