BMC in market search for Ngamiland livestock
28 Oct 2015
The Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) Maun Plant manager Mr Mothobi Mothobi says the search for potential market for Ngamiland live cattle continues.
In an interview, Mr Mothobi said although the Maun BMC recently re-opened after closure for refurbishment, it still could not efficiently reduce the population of Ngamiland cattle despite the increase of number of cattle to be slaughtered. He noted that the refurbishment which was completed early September has increased the number of slaughtered cattle from 90 to 120 and reduced use of manpower in the slaughtering process.
Mr Mothobi said upgrading the BMC had reduced the slaughtering process greatly and allowed slaughtering for local butcheries.
He said they were putting measures in place to facilitate slaughtering for local butcheries, expected to begin mid-December.
Mr Mothobi said the recent Foot and Mouth disease outbreak at Hainaveld farms affected the arrangement to take 400 cattle from Ngamiland for slaughtering at Francistown abattoir to be sold to Mozambique market.
Mr Mothobi added that the beef slaughtered at Maun BMC was currently sold locally and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Ends
