Choppies invests in future confectioners

25 Oct 2015

Jwana Primary school pupils thronged Choppies supermarket in Jwaneng in a jovial mood recently to learn how to make sweet cakes.

A confectioner Matlhogolo Shanka was surrounded by happy faces eagerly waiting to know how sponge bread, cream and cherries are blended together to produce a delicious cake.

The store manager Mr Thebeetsile Mokoya revealed in an interview that they have decided to involve the community in their bakery section to help them in making improvements to meet customer demands.

He said in order to cultivate confidence in their customers, they resorted to offer transparent cake making lessons to primary school going kids, where they will see ingredients used and be hands on as well as tasting the finished products.

“We have engaged Jwana Primary students in the training because we believe in empowering the young generation who can be tomorrow’s confectioners or professional cake makers,” he explained.

Mr Mokoya alluded that with Batswana hit hard by limited employment, their training is an investment for future cake makers.

He highlighted that cake making was a simple exercise and they made it more fun to pupils by doing it for free as a way of giving back to the community.

He said the smallest fee of P20 was suggested by the Jwana primary teachers for the purpose of order and the funds will go to charity.

Mr Mokoya said they had approached two primary schools being Jwana and Acacia primary and they intended to roll the training to other three primary schools in Jwaneng.

“As a community supermarket, we saw it vital to transfer skills to the future generation as a social responsibility and open for public involvement in our day to day sales”, he said. ENDS
