Presidential Housing Appeal is aiming for 1 000 houses by 2018. Senior Private Secretary to the President, Brigadier George Tlhalerwa, said this when handing over a house to Ms Lesang Seapei who is living with disability in Leshibitse recently.
He said 533 houses had already been donated under the initiative while 96 were under construction.
He said on average, a house provided shelter to about six people hence the 1 000 house could provide shelter to about 6000 people. Brigadier Tlhalerwa added that the housing appeal had been made possible by the generous support from communities.
For his part, The coordinator of people living with disabilities in the Office of the President, Mr Thomas Motingwa commended President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama for coming up with such an a noble initiative.
He said in the past, people living with disabilities were living under harsh conditions and benefited little from government programmes.
Therefore, he said government had brought coordination for services of people with disabilities under one roof and that proved to be helpful.
In addition, Mr Motingwa asked government authorities not to subject people with disabilities to rigorous assessment when they applied for empowerment programmes.
House beneficiary, Ms Lesang Seapei, expressed gratitude for the gesture by Leshibitse VDC, Botswana Couriers and Logistics and Kebo Electrical. She said the two bed-roomed house would change her fortunes as she will now house her family and live in dignity.
Leshibitse VDC chairperson, Ms Onkarabile Seloiso, said they started the house through the help of Ipelegeng.
She said Botswana Couriers and Logistics came on board and assisted with finishing and furnishing the house while Kebo electrical installed electricity. Botswana Couriers and Logistics also donated 10 food baskets to other underprivileged people. Ends
