Economy recovering well - Mmolotsi

14 Oct 2015

Francistown South MP, Mr Wynter Mmolotsi has informed residents of Block 7 in Ipopeng Ward that the country’s economy is  now recovering  following the last recession. Addressing a kgotla meeting in the ward recently,  Mr Mmolotsi said currently the foreign reserves stand at slightly above P88 billion.

He said according to economic experts, the funds in the foreign reserves could sustain the country for a period of 23 months in import cover.

Mr Mmolotsi said just as the government has recently announced its intention of using the reserves to stimulate the economy, he is hopeful that the created employment opportunities would  be sustainable for a longer period.

He said he is hopeful that government will use the reserves to service loans such as the one used to fund the Tonota-Francistown Road.

On water and power shortages, Mr Mmolotsi said there is a critical shortage of water, particularly in the southern part of the country.

Mr Mmolotsi said as part of the solution to the crisis, water will be carried from the north to the south and parliament has tasked the Minister of Minerals Energy and Water Resources to approach the owners of the private dams in view of mapping a way forward.

As for the power shortage, the Francistown South legislator said he was hopeful that revival of the Morupule A and completion of Morupule B will be the solution.

During comments and questions, one of the residents, Mr Shadreck Kalanke raised a concern about some government employees who look down upon the community members instead of serving them.

Mr Kalanke cited that in one instance, a junior officer ordered him out of the office after he had complained of poor service.

Earlier in his welcome remarks, Phase IV Court president, Kgosi Masego Masonya appealed to the residents to revive and preserve culture in the city.

He said residents should not only be entertained by conducting culture days every year, but fail to reflect culture by dressing appropriately when coming to gatherings such as kgotla meetings.

Kgosi Masonya said it will be unnecessary to commemorate culture days if after the commemorations the residents could not practice what culture dictates. Ipopeng Ward Development Committee (WDC) secretary, Mr Modisana Ntekolang told the meeting that the Ipelegeng programme was faced by a lot of challenges such a high number of people indicating interest to enrol. Ends
