Former Botswana Defence Force (BDF) commander Lt Gen. Tebogo Masire says education needs support from all stakeholders so that positive results could be produced.
Speaking at Shangano junior secondary school prize giving ceremony in Sebina last week, Lt Gen. Masire said there were many distractions in today’s modern life and teachers could not be responsible for monitoring students both at school and home.
Without strong support from parents, he explained that teachers would have a difficult time teaching; hence he called upon them to cooperate with teachers by meeting regularly to discuss the welfare of their children.
Lt Gen. Masire urged the students to take education seriously and avoid things that could distract them; saying in the modern world, education was at the centre of life a key to a sustainable life.
He said education placed an individual at an advanced level of life; thus he encouraged learners to take it seriously.
Furthermore, the former army commander commended and congratulated the recipients of the prizes. He stated that it was through their patience, hard work and discipline that they managed to be where they are.
Also, he encouraged those who did not receive a prize to put more effort into their work and never give up.
In addition, he commended teachers for their hard work and the effort they put in to shape the students into great future leaders. Earlier on, school head, Mr Jabulani Nfila decried lack of classrooms and teachers accommodation, which he said affects the learning environment.
Mr Nfila also said students walk long distance to and from school adding that teenage pregnancy and truancy were some of the problems bedeviling the school.
Despite all these challenges, he said the school performance had improved for the past three years. Lt Gen. Masire donated P10 000 and three scientific calculators to the best three performing students in Form 1, 2 and 3. Ends
