Minister calls for joint effort against cyber crime

The digital revolution has brought forth a new enemy in the form of cyber-crime, Minister of Transport and Communications Mr Nonofo Molefhi said at the Conference on African Cyber Risk in Gaborone last week.

The minister said the situation calls for protection of computer network systems and the entire national information infrastructure from hostile nations and organised criminals.

“A functional security system is a key pillar for any online service delivery where digital and internet-based information technology will allow greater access to information and services,” he said.

Minister Molefhi said Batswana expect to enjoy reduced costs and improved access to functions of government through digitised information and public services.

The minister said high speed internet was also being deployed to improve service delivery across a full range of government functions.

“Developed countries have long embarked on these developments and some of us need to catch up in order to enhance our efficiency,” he said.

The minister said online services pose profound security challenges that may affect citizens’ trust in government, including threats to identity, privacy and data systems.

Minister Molefhi said it is thus important to safeguard data, and this was a priority for government.

He said if systems are not perceived to be secure, there would be no meaningful uptake of online services such as internet banking, online shopping and other online activities.

“As such, persistent cyber threats remain a challenge for both the government and the nation as a whole,” he said.

The minister said constant reports of cyber-attacks against governments and large organisations mean criminals are always developing skills and methods of attacking faster than the development of security systems.

“Cyber security therefore needs collective capacity building strategies among our countries,” he said.

The minister said defending the cyber space calls for collective efforts between the government, the private sector and academic institutions. He added that security training is paramount.

“We understand that our adversaries target our cyber infrastructure and it is our resolve to develop appropriate capabilities to protect our critical infrastructure,” he said.

The minister said there has to be robust safe and secure networks and infrastructure which can give confidence to systems users that their personal and corporate data is protected. Ends
