07 Oct 2015

In an effort to combat corruption which is a major concern in the country, the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) together with Junior Chambers International Botswana (JCI) signed a memorandum of understanding which is aimed at targeting the youth.

Speaking during the signing ceremony held in Gaborone, DCEC deputy director-general Ms Botlhale Makgekgenene said this collaborative partnership with JCI will enable the youth as future leaders to express their views on anti-corruption.

She stressed that the youth’s views on anti-corruption would bring about meaningful strategies that can be used to assist the DCEC in the fight against corruption.

“It is my earnest belief that this collaborative effort with JCI Botswana will go a long way in working with the youth to create a positive change in the communities,” she said.

She said concerted efforts are required from all stakeholders in the society to fight the scourge of corruption stressing that it impacts negatively on all levels of society.

Ms Makgekgenene noted that the collaborative partnership between DCEC and JCI Botswana was envisaged in 2013 following the DCEC exhibiting and raising awareness during the JCI Africa and the Middle East conference in May 2013 in Gaborone. She said in November 2013 the DCEC took a collaborative effort further by conducting anti-corruption awareness to JCI members in Jwaneng, Tsabong, Kanye and Gaborone.

For his part JCI Botswana 2015 national president Mr Lebegang Sebusang said this collaborative effort targets the youth hence the need to utilize them in fighting corruption.

Reaching out to majority of the youth Mr Sebusang said they, as JCI Botswana have embarked on introducing JCI chapters in the universities around, stating that so far there is a chapter at Botho University, University of Botswana and on the pipeline to reach other universities.

He noted that JCI Botswana has a huge database of the youth therefore it is essential to make sure the memorandum of understanding becomes practical and makes a positive impact.

On another issue Mr Sebusang urged the public to be less fearful and comfortable whenever they are working with DCEC on investigations. Ends
