Councillor calls for change of policy

02 Oct 2015

Councillor for Tlogatloga ward in Gaborone has called for change of policy for allocating plots in open spaces to youth on temporary basis.

Commenting on the mayor’s speech at the Gaborone City Council (GCC) full council meeting recently, Ms Rhoda Sekgororoane said if youth were allocated the plots on temporary basis, they would not engage in meaningful and rewarding businesses.

Therefore, she said it was upon government to change the approach so that the youth could now embark on massive and profitable enterprises, which could also create job opportunities.

On other issues, she said there was need to trim and debush Segoditshane valley as it had turned into a hideout for criminals.

On a similar note, she said the Extension 14 graveyard, which had a rich history of having apartheid struggle heroes and heroines needs to be taken care of by being provided with working ablutions and provided with 24 hour security.

For his part, Councillor for Marulamantsi ward, Mr Sergeant Kgosietsile hailed government’s commitment to bringing water to the south of the country through NSC II project.

Mr Kgosietsile said the initiative would save the greater Gaborone from shortage of water.

He, however, said shortage of water in Gaborone was a wakeup call for GCC to partner with private sector and start recycling waste water.

Councillor Kgosietsile, however, blamed shortage of water and electricity to corrupt practices by those who had been given the opportunity to oversee them.

While government was doing a commendable effort in allocating plots in open space to the youth to do businesses, he said it was equally worth considering setting aside some land in prime areas for the youth, because that was where the magnitude of people and customers could be found.

Commenting on the same speech, Councillor for Moselewapula ward, Mr Tonic Bonang said the council should with a matter of urgency restore the use of public toilets at the Gaborone bus station since  people were now using any available space to relief themselves, something which was a health hazard.

In addition, Councillor Bonang said Phase II sewage line was susceptible to blocking time and gain and urged those responsible to remedy the situation. Ends
