Water supply still problematic

27 Sep 2015

Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) says water supply in most areas in Gaborone remains stable with rationing having commenced in all the fully recovered areas.

A press release from WUC states that water supply in Tlokweng is generally low especially on high ground.

It further states that some areas in Mogoditshane are receiving supply at low pressure while areas such as Mmopane, still do not have water while Metsimotlhabe is receiving supply at low pressure.

The statement notes that Kumakwane is still supplied from boreholes which are not meeting demand while other areas do not have water.

The release says after receiving supply in Gabane on September 22-23, it was lost on September 24 whereas in Mochudi some areas have recovered as bowsing continues in those areas still without supply.

It says Lobatse currently does not have water while Molapowabojang is receiving supply at low pressure.

The statement notes that the main transfer scheme feeding Mankgodi and Mogonye burst on Friday hence the villages and surrounding will remain without water while repairs are ongoing.

The press release states that the greater Gaborone area’s average demand surpasses supply by 32.9 million litres a day. It says even with rationing the demand surpasses supply by 17.9 million litres a day.

Due to this, WUC says the area will continue to experience low pressure to no water supply even outside the rationing schedule.

The statement says areas which were supplied by Gaborone Dam are the most affected.

“This is mainly due to the layout of the water network which is efficient in bringing water from the northern part of the city to the southern part (Onion tower) for re –distribution.”

WUC says some sources that supply greater Gaborone area have failed with Bokaa dam and Gaborone dam at two per cent and 1.4 per cent respectively.

The release says Nnywane dam is at 55.9 per cent, Molatedi 8.2 per cent while North South carrier scheme is able to supply 60 million litres per day.

Masama wellfield has 20 million litres supply per day while Ramotswa wellfield has five million litres per day.

The total available supply is 92.10illion litres per day with a 17.9 million litres deficit per day. ENDS
