GCC partners with Vasteras

The mayor of Gaborone, Cllr Kagiso Thutlwe, says the city council entered into a partnership agreement with Vasteras Municipality, Sweden, in 2011 on various developmental issues.
Addressing a full council meeting recently, the mayor said, among these developmental issues, waste management was identified as one of the most urgent issues.
He said the partnership was, however, limited to technical support and it involved having experts and administrators being exposed to Swedes technologies while at the same time getting Swedes technocrats and managers coming to Botswana.
The mayor said, through the agreement, GCC identified areas of collaboration such as designing a waste transfer station.
“We believe that with such a facility, GCC will be in a better position to improve waste management in the city,” he said .
For the past three years, GCC and Vasteras were able to meet and deliver milestone activities for the transfer station. Mayor Thutlwe noted that the waste transfer station also expected to have a waste recycling component where recyclable material would be separated from the landfill waste and diverted to the markets as resources while the waste was relayed to the landfill.
