Waste collection fee in offing
24 Sep 2015
The public health department is in the process of introducing waste collection fees in Gaborone, says the city mayor, Mr Kagiso Thutlwe.
When addressing a full council meeting, Mr Thutlwe said the aim of the arrangement was to have each household in Gaborone pay a sum of P10 per month as a service fee for waste collection.
He said throughout the course of time, the council had been collecting waste free of charge but in 2013, the council resolved that waste collection services had to be paid for.
The mayor noted that now that the service would be paid for, it was imperative that the council also strive to improve on the waste collection service adding that one of the most important element of waste collection is the collection fleet itself highlighting that it is important to make sure that the fleet is kept on the road so that they could provide quality service.
“I am convinced that if the council could provide quality service, people will be keen to pay for the service and I guarantee that as councillors we will be in a better position to support the idea,” he said.
The mayor noted that this idea was not new as in other districts people had always been paying for waste collection services.
He said the only challenge was that in those districts, people could choose not to pay but in Gaborone collection would be in every household hence everybody will be expected to pay. Ends
