21 Sep 2015
Employees of Boteti Sub- district Council have been advised that workplace health programmes serve as a means to actively engage employees in all kinds of self-help protection and self-support initiatives.
Speaking at a health fair and wellness celebration day in Letlhakane recently, principal registered nurse for Boteti region, Ms Persia Mmokwa, said healthy living is about taking responsibility and making smart health choices today to avoid diseases of tomorrow.
She reiterated that eating right, getting physically fit and spiritual wellness make a healthy lifestyle and form the cornerstones of the three ‘Yous’. She said that the ‘Physical You’ deals with good nutrition, appropriate weight, adequate rest and proper stress management.
Ms Mmokwa said the ‘Emotional You’ is concerned with positive thoughts, a self-supportive attitude and positive self-image.
She urged the employees to give and receive forgiveness to remain stress free. She said that knowing God, the ‘Spiritual You’, is about achieving inner calmness.
For his part, chairperson of occupational health and safety (OHS) at Central District Council Mr Kgosi Dibebe said occupational health and safety is a government initiative geared towards encouraging public servants to know their health status so that government programmes are not compromised by an unhealthy workforce.
He said the main objective of the OHS committee is to promote health and safety programmes in the workplace.
He said the role of the employer is to maintain a work environment that is safe and free of risk. He said employees should adhere to prescribed health and safety measures while respecting other employees’ rights.
He told them that they should also respect each other’s financial, health and social status.
The activities of the day included a 10 km walk from Mmatshumo Junction to Letlhakane, football, netball, an egg race and a tug of war. Participants had the opportunity to test for various diseases like HIV/AIDS and non-communicable diseases. The theme of the event was A O Tsogile? (Are You Well?) Ends
