Wellness in workplace raises productivity

20 Sep 2015

Ministry of Health HIV/AIDS coordinator, Ms Morin Mpho. says wellness is essential in the workplace for public servants to render good quality service.  Speaking during wellness day in Moshupa Sub district recently, Ms Mpho said it is high time the nation responded to wellness as it promotes performance and productivity in the workplace.

She noted that productivity and performance have decreased  due to emotional stress and interpersonal conflicts.  Ms Mpho added that wellness can create a healthy environment that would address poor quality work.

“Wellness is the recognition that individuals have a responsibility to take care of themselves physically, emotionally and psychologically. Getting exercise, maintaining healthy relationships and eliminating risky behaviors such as smoking are all components to wellness,” she added. Moshupa District HIV/AIDS coordinator, Ms Khumo Baakile explained  that wellness day is a joint activity observed by government departments   and private sectors to foster a healthy workplace.

Ms Baakile stated that all organizations should highlight health related issues because a healthy mind produces quality products.

“All departments should participate in wellness day so that public servants can have the message of the day well on time and also to participate in activities of the day, because a lot of them do not have time to exercise,” she noted.

Ms Baakile said that wellness is not only about fitness but is also about how to maintain a healthy environment and what people should indulge in to keep themselves healthy.

Speaking on behalf of the district health management team, Ms Nancy Gabotshetse said it was their call to bring services to the public.

She said since a lot of employees are   always busy, it is better to do health screenings during wellness day.  Ends
