Botswana remembers International Deaf Awareness Week

Botswana will, next week, hold various activities to commemorate the International Deaf Awareness Week in Maun.
The International Deaf Awareness Week is known as the only international week of the year that sees a highly concentrated global advocacy to raise awareness about the deaf community at individual, community and governmental level .
According to Ms Lorato Ma rope, the public relations officer for the Botswana Society for the Deaf, the deaf community would come together to show unity to the rest of the world.
“The aim of these celebrations is to spread messages of the success and the rights of the deaf people around Botswana and the rest of the world” she explained.
She said, this year the International Deaf Awareness Week will be held at the Maun Stadium starting on September 23, where the former president patron of Botswana Society for the Deaf, Mr Festus Mogae would give a key note address.
The week will be commemorated through various activities such as a march, ball sports, sign language and deaf culture lessons, exhibitions and a beauty pageant by deaf participants.
She said the Miss International Deaf Awareness Week pageant tickets were already available at the Botswana Society for the Deaf offices in Gaborone, Extension 2, Plot 1061 and at Maun senior school.
Tickets are P20 for both adults and children.
“On behalf of the deaf community, Botswana Society for the Deaf would like to urge the public to come and be part of this memorable event as we celebrate the unity, lives and success of the deaf people” she enthused. Ends
