Pick n’ Pay Mokolodi Scorpion Mountain Bike (MTB) challenge will on September 20 celebrate their 13th annual event with over 400 cyclists participating.
This year’s edition has secured a P60 000 sponsorship from Pick n’ Pay, marking a 13 year relationship since the inception of the race, which will be hosted on the terrains of the Mokolodi game reserve.
The bushy, bumpy and tough terrains of the reserve will see off juniors, masters, veteran senior cyclists racing under distances of 55km and 36km and fun races of 20km and 5km. Organised by Gaborone cycling club, the grand prize of the challenge will be P1500 cash.
Addressing the media in Gaborone recently, race director Kfir Teichman of Gaborone cycling club described the Mokolodi challenge as the biggest cycling race in Botswana. He said the people had received the spot well.
“The terrain in Mokolodi is very challenging, with very nice rough roads, some nice steep hills which make the race technical and tough while providing the racers with a good challenge,” he said.
Teichman said over the years cycling had shown immense transformation, he pronounced cycling as the new golf because international influential personalities have been engaged with cycling.
Bruce Milne, managing director of Pick n’ Pay said they are proud to be the main sponsor of the cycling challenge for the 13th year in a row.
“The sponsorship goes towards assisting both the Gaborone Cycling Club as well as the Mokolodi Nature reserve,” he said. Milne said the Gaborone Cycling Club (GCC) was doing a great job with the development of cycling in Botswana and at the same time promoting a healthier lifestyle.
He also applauded GCC for a good course with the event, saying the Mokolodi Nature Reserve was doing a tremendous work in both wildlife conservation and education. ENDS
