15 Sep 2015

Masunga Senior Secondary School recently celebrated its 20 years of existence as an institute of learning.

Giving a keynote address at the 20th Anniversary, Botswana Oil general manager for corporate services, Mr Mokwena Morulane congratulated the leadership, former and current students, teachers and parents for preparing for the occasion. He said the anniversary was a milestone that serves as a reflection of their successes and challenges.

Mr Morulane however acknowledged the efforts by teachers towards educating the nation, noting that teachers were doing a noble profession, which may come with challenges that require one to be passionate, focused and resilient.

He said teaching environment has circumstances that need one to be innovative, creative and empathetic when doing it.

The celebration was held under the theme A step towards vision 2016-striving for academic excellence, which Mr Morulane said aligns well with Botswana’s Vision 2016 pillar of becoming an informed and educated nation.

Furthermore, he said the theme acts as a calling to the school to be counted amongst excelling schools in the country, saying they could only achieve this step through retrospection, building on their strengths as well as acknowledging their areas of improvement.

However, Mr Morulane said having had the opportunity to peruse the Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education results over the last few years, there was a clear indication that the school has the potential to become an academy of excellence for leadership development.

On other issues, Mr Morulane called upon the business community in the North East district to fully participate and support schools by expanding the corporate social responsibility programmes and to adopt schools as well.

He said leadership development like education required the collaboration across various sectors and disciplines and for that extended his gratitude to Mr Tebogo Eric, who has already adopted the school.

The ceremony was also graced with the unveiling of the monument, symbolizing the partnership that should be forged between parents and teachers towards the proper upbringing of a child.

On her welcoming remarks, the school head Ms Mmadube Letsholathebe said history shows that Masunga senior was doing well academically, saying despite having challenges they managed to persevere and said they were aiming to do even better in order for them to be academic giants.

Ms Letsholathebe appreciated the support and contribution they get from the Parents Teachers Association and other stakeholders. For his part, the chairperson of the organising committee, Mr Wabo Tshosa thanked everyone who participated towards making the preparation of the event possible, appealing that the spirit should be maintained even for other future events.
