Kweneng in mission to reverse suicide tide
15 Sep 2015
Senior clinical psychologist at Scottish Livingstone Hospital in Molepolole, Mr Mohammad Sadeque, has called on traditional and religious leaders to intervene and stem the worsening tide of suicide cases in Kweneng District.
In an interview during the commemoration of the World Suicide Prevention Day recently, Mr Sadeque noted that suicide cases, including patients who have had thoughts of committing suicide and those who have attempted to commit suicide, affect people in the 14-30 year age range in the district.
He urged traditional and church leaders as well as other relevant stakeholders to assist government in coming up with strategies to curb the problem.
He said hopelessness and frustration about life and the future as well as a sudden change in mood could be symptoms of suicidal behaviour. The clinical psychologist said one could suddenly become talkative and reveal how tired they are of living. He advised individuals to always seek help and support from family members, social workers and other relevant authorities.
He added that it is important for one to express feelings as opposed to bottling them up. Mr Sadeque said the best way to deal with the symptoms is to engage clinical assistance and social workers. He urged people to learn to accept their health and social conditions.
“Suicide is not a solution to problems. Express your emotions, share your feelings and say a big no to suicide,” he said.
He said their mandate is to educate the public about suicide and how it can be prevented to reduce its prevalence. The interactive event attracted a lot of people who appreciated its relevance in this era where unemployment is high.
Mr Moabi Raditholo, a resident of Molepolole, related that he has helped someone with suicidal moods before.
He said that the information he has gained from the event will help community members, especially youths, to live life to the fullest. He further advised the public that it is imperative to seek free help from clinics and hospitals whenever they are depressed. Ends
