Despite being visually challenged, 30-year-old Mr Mpho Keikabile is a music instructor and a Braille proof reader at Lephoi Centre in Francistown. In an interview recently, Mr Keikabile said living with disability requires one to be strong, focused and confident.
He said he was driven by the desire to be independent in the face of the odds stacked against him. “Living with disabilities is tough, but with support, focus and encouragement, one can excel and achieve their desired goals,” he said.
He started his primary education in Selibe-Phikwe. He was later transferred to Phatlhogo Primary School in Francistown where he was introduced to Braille. He furthered his education at Pudulogong Rehabilitation Centre and Development Trust in Mochudi, where he studied music and related subjects.
He also has a certificate in management. Upon completing his studies at Pudulogong, he was employed at Lephoi Centre in Francistown as a Braille proof reader and a music teacher. He has also scooped a gold medal in sports.
“I have participated in goal ball sport, which is a sport code for the blind,” he said.
Mr Keikabile is able to work on his laptop without any assistance, and he can even walk around alone. He advised caretakers of people living with disabilities not to consider their conditions as a curse. He encouraged them to give people living disabilities the support they need.
He also urged people living with disabilities to take advantage of government programmes that were intended to empower them. Ends
