Ministry aware of farmers challenges

15 Apr 2013

The Ministry of Agriculture has acknowledged challenges that farmers are faced with in having equipped and running boreholes.

Assistant Minister Oreeditse Molebatsi said in response to a Parliamentary question Friday that the problem was a common phenomenon throughout the country.

He noted that the ministry assisted farmers who owned livestock with either drilling new boreholes, equipping existing ones or purchasing through the Livestock Management and Infrastructure Development (LIMID) water development component. Parliament also heard that the Ministry of Agriculture was not mandated to prospect or survey water.

Shoshong MP, Mr Phillip Makgalemele had asked the minister whether he was aware that most farmers in the Shoshong constituency faced challenges of having equipped and running boreholes citing cost of prospecting, digging and equipping as key challenges.  ENDS
