03 Sep 2015

Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ms Botlogile Tshireletso, says government is worried by beneficiaries of destitute housing  who are deliberately vandalising their houses.

Addressing a Kgotla meeting in Sehonou on Monday August 31, Ms Tshireletso said some destitute housing beneficiaries who have a tendency of vandalising the houses work against government efforts of trying to provide all Batswana with a decent shelter.

She stated that some destitute houses handed over not long ago were on bad state saying that their window panes were already broken and doors were damaged while graffiti is all over their walls. Ms Tshireletso warned Sehunou residents that if beneficiaries do not take care of houses donated to them, there would be nothing to show when Remote Area Development Program (RADP) affirmative action frame work term elapses.

Ms Tshireletso called for sense of ownership towards all assistance afforded to them as such assistance will not be forever.

She stated that 11 destitute houses built in Sehunou were already handed to the beneficiaries while three more are still built, while they were 22 assessed destitute who were in need of shelter.

Concerning poverty eradication programme, Ms Tshireletso who was unhappy with the number of beneficiaries in the programme in  Sehunou said those who were given backyard gardens and not received packages should change to alternative packages because there  is shortage of water in the country.

Meanwhile residents raised concern that they had long been trained under the poverty eradication programme but they have not received their packages. The assistant minister also addressed kgotla meeting at Moiyabana where she enlightened residents about Children’s Act.

In his welcome remarks, Kgosi Mokopakgomo Kgomokgwana of Moiyabana cautioned government against piling more work load on the department of social and community development.
