26 Aug 2015
The Vice President Mr Mokgweetsi Masisi has told residents of Mogonye that the Special Economic Zones Policy will benefit Batswana in numerous ways.
Speaking during a kgotla meeting on Monday August 24, Mr Masisi said the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) are created as geographically distinct economic areas that provides investor-friendly business environment which will make Botswana the most preferred location for both domestic and foreign investment.
He said the policy will help diversify the economy and expedite service delivery adding too much bureaucracy scares off potential investors who may end up going to neighbouring countries.
The Vice President said the policy seeks to avoid sending potential investors from pillar to post when they want to invest in the country or when in need of services. He said the policy is good for the country and its people hence challenged employees to eliminate unnecessary delays and complaints.
The SEZs policy aims at diversifying the economic and export base into sectors that will continue to grow long after diamonds have run out. The policy further provides for the development of public sector, private sector and public-private sector partnership SEZs across the country and sectors, as the market would dictate.
The SEZs policy is also cast within the context of domestic policies, strategies and legislation that have a significant impact on the policy and vice versa.
This allows for the SEZs to be used as “economic laboratories” and “demonstration areas” for the development and growth of world class enterprises in Botswana. The Vice President who is also Moshupa-Manyana legislator briefed residents on Botswana Land Policy explaining that such policies are created to improve the quality and standard of life of Batswana.
For their part, residents appreciated government programmes and initiatives more especially the poverty eradication programme. One of the residents, Ms Letsema Sekgaodi, a poverty eradication beneficiary hailed the programme.
Ms Sekgaodi has invested into goat farming and says she is doing well in the market. Village Development Committee chairperson, Ms Christin Banka-Gwai said Ipelegeng is doing well in the village and looking forward to seeing it soaring. Ends
