Metropolitan Life Botswana will sponsor this coming weekend’s Metropolitan Northern Open Golf Championship.

The company’s relations manager, Tebogo Toteng said sport tourism can play a critical role in the transformation of cities as well as diversifying the country’s economy. Toteng was speaking at the launch of the championship to be played on August 29-30 at the Francistown Golf Club.

He noted that sport does not only offer entertainment but also offers opportunity for employment, adding that by sponsoring the tournament, Metropolitan Botswana want to be part of the city’s efforts to diversify the economy through events tourism.

Toteng said the tournament, which is sponsored to the tune of P100 000 will attract 60 golfers from around the country. He explained that the tournament, which will be in its second edition, is sanctioned by Botswana Golf Union , hence no other tournaments will be taking place parallel to it.

“It is a prestigious tournament on the Botswana golf calendar and will be used as a criterion to select the national team players,” he said. He said sponsoring the tournament is part of Metropolitan Botswana’s corporate and social responsibility.

“This is an indication of commitment to sports development and to ensure that our company becomes relevant to the evolving needs of the sporting community and the country at large,” he said.He called on other corporate companies to assist in sponsoring other activities that will ensure the abundance of talent in and around the city.

Meanwhile the 60 golfers are expected from Orapa, Sowa, Selebi Phikwe, Jwaneng, Mowana, Gaborone, Phakalane, Francistown, Pemogranite, Tantabane and Bulawayo golf clubs and the tournament will be played over 36 hole stroke play with daily prizes and overall prizes. Ends
