University to address agriculture issues

23 Aug 2015

Parliament has resolved that a third university, which will be called University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, be built.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Nata/Gweta, Mr Polson Majaga told residents of Kutamogoree in a kgotla meeting recently that the university would focus on different fields ranging from agriculture, livestock and natural resources.

Mr Majaga said the resolution came after it was realised that the agricultural sector was no longer given full attention despite the fact that it was one sector that made Botswana what it was today.

He noted that before mines were established, the country’s economy depended on agriculture animals to working at the mines.

The MP said mines have proved that they could not sustain the country’s economy forever as they sometimes close down.

Commenting, residents welcomed the idea and decried that schools should be maintained so that students could learn in a clean and good environment.

A resident, Mr Zibanani Bayi said Dukwi Junior Secondary School should be maintained and security provided at the hostels as they were prone to breakings and theft.  He asked for the provision of a storm water drainage system at the local primary school to curb floods during rainy seasons, which affects the road to school and teachers’ quarters.

Residents complained about the decision taken by Tutume Sub-district council to have Ipelegeng employees paid at Botswana Post.

They said the move has affected them negatively as they go for months without receiving their payments, and that they have no post office in their village hence they travel to Tutume to get their payment.

In his response, Mr Majaga promised to liaise with relevant authorities to have such concerns addressed. Ends
