Exchange of blows scheduled for Francistown

Ring side calls such as block, upper cuts and straight punches will be the order of the day as boxers are set to exchange fists at the Botswana Boxing association (BOBA) interclub tournament slated for Francistown on Saturday (August 22).
BoBA public Relations officer Kenny Maragana said the tourney will be held at Donga camp and hosted by the association.
He said the competition will be used as a yardstick to qualify the boxers for National Championships and Best of the Best tournaments.
He said winners from this encounter will be legible for national team selection. Maragana said they are expecting 15 clubs to participate in the competition and that the tournament is part of the association’s strategy to increase club participation.
The PRO said the meet attracts the youth, elite and female boxers.
He said it is their desire to witness an increased number of competitive boxers at all the levels. Maragana said that the success of boxing at elite level is driven by their ability to develop credible boxers at development level.
He said despite this there are determined to produce competitive female boxers and said today BoBA prides itself for having fielded a female boxer at the on-going Africa Championships at Morocco.
Maragana said they want to make boxing a sport for all and said although women boxing took off slowly, there has been a notable improvement.
He noted that they are determined to raise competitive female boxers and be able to field sound national teams comprising of a good number of women.
On another note Maragana said their youth Otukile Mahommed and Kutlwano Ogaketse are on camp warming up for the Samoa Youth Common wealth games and highlighted that they are confident that the duo will perform impressively given their past achievements in Africa Youth Games.
