Logagane benefits from donkey cart initiative
19 Aug 2015
Southern District Council senior assistant council secretary, Ms Keitumetse Moilwa urged Logagane community to fully utilise the donkey cart given to them by Orange Botswana for the benefit of their children.
Speaking at the launch of the initiative, Ms Moilwa said government introduced the initiative after realising that most children travelled long distances to and from schools, in which Orange Botswana (PTY) LTD offered to sponsor some villages with the donkey carts.
She said the rationale was to assist pupils travelling more than five kilometres with a mode of transport to help them get to school in time. She added that travelling such distances resulted in children getting tired hence low concentration and performance in their studies.
Ms Moilwa added that the Southern District Council has currently been offered one donkey cart which was given to Good Hope Sub- district Council after a series of consultative kgotla meetings for consideration of placement of the donkey cart. She went on to say Logagane village was chosen to receive the present adding that the community should consider themselves lucky.
She said the initiative calls for a cordial relationship between the community and the government in which the community is requested to volunteer their donkeys with a compensation fee equal to that of Ipelegeng employees.
Earlier in his welcome remarks, Kgosi Wilfred Seleka said even though people are now living in the modern times where they have changed from using donkey carts or walking to using modern transport, they could not reject the gift as it might bear them fruitful results in future.
He said since the donkey cart could only carry 10 pupils, it is important for community members to decide on the selection criteria. Ends
