JSC sets record straight
16 Aug 2015
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has dismissed as untrue some media reports that alleged that the chief justice has reported some judges to the police for investigations.
A press release says the decision to refer the issue of wrongful payment and receipt of housing allowance to an independent investigation was not taken by the chief justice alone as suggested.
“Contrary to the front-page article in Mmegi of August 14 titled the Chief Justice reports judges to police, the decision was of the JSC as a whole, taken unanimously in good faith after a lengthy and searching debate,” the release says.
“It should be noted that the JSC is charged with protecting the integrity of the judiciary and of the Administration of Justice,” adds the release.
In terms of the internal audit report, the release says the alleged payments concerned total in excess of P800 000 and this was considered to be a matter that could not be adequately resolved internally. ENDS
